The Tenth Power

I - Tears on a Starry Sky - Prologue
Spoiler:
]More than 1,200 years ago, a demon-like creature appeared, and its overwhelming power threatened the existence of all life on Earth. The origin of this monster is unclear; it is speculated that it was an awaken evil of an even more ancient time. But many people disagree and claim that it was the physical form of Damdal, one of the twin gods who represented chaos. Just as its origins are unknown and explanations vary from place to place, the demon’s name also changes depending on the geography. It is not as much as an specific name, rather, it’s its title what has a lot of variations. Some of them include "Pure Evil," "Discord Discharged," "Chaos Lord," "Black Sun," and many, many others. But here, in the country of Duplica, we call it "The Root of All Evil." It is said that with his power he ruled for decades while almost exterminating all human life. After some time, the very few survivors on Earth formed their own groups and towns where they hoped that they could continue living and not being found. But soon after that, human determination for peace and harmony proved to be the only threat to the monster. And it was a success. After a few years, a group of people found a specific power that helped them deal a heavy blow to their enemy. Again, it is difficult to say how they obtained their powers; the old writings describe a god-like light that granted them their abilities, strongly supporting the theory that it was Danbod, the good god twin, the one who shared his powers to humans to stop his brother. But even then, it’s still not clear how it happened, since all the ancient writings have contradictions an descriptions that not only trouble each other, most of them either lack context or an apparent relevance.

Burmel, the fire master. He was capable of controlling fire and manipulated heat at his will and incinerated anything that his eyes could see. Econao, the water master. She could move great amounts of water with little effort and her abilities allowed her to live and make the oceans her home. Gopamlare, the thunder master. His control over lightning and electricity granted him incredibly quick and flashy powers. Terra, the earth master. It’s said that she was capable of moving entire continents with her immense power; truly one of the most incredible and useful skills. Toinve, the wind master. He was able to use his powers to move anything he wanted, even himself, allowing the fantastic ability of flight. This group of people were known as the five nature-styled masters, half of what formed the warriors that defeated the beast. The other five persons possessed even more amazing powers, which are represented with time, space, body, and mind. Not much is known about who those warriors were or what the limit of their powers was. But there’s still one power missing, one that, according to the warriors’ writings, was the most powerful and important key to the destruction of the demon. The truth is that nobody seems to know what this power was, what represented it, how it worked, or even its role in saving the world; all we know is that whatever writing that mentions it, says it’s “indescribable.” This is called “the tenth power,” and people from all corners of the world have been searching for it after many centuries, but never with any success. As far as we are, we only have theories and explanations that attempt to give answers regarding this lost power, but there has never been any kind of agreement, so in the end it always results in personal interpretation, or even faith. The fascination for this power comes from the last pages of the warriors’ books. They describe that, even with the combination of the other nine powers, defeating The Root was only possible thanks to this mysterious ability that nobody, apparently not even the warriors who witnessed it, seems to know about. Even more amazing is how the books all describe the end of the conflict.

At the end of the battle, the warriors decided to give the rest of humanity their powers, as a way to hope that if The Root ever returned, we would be able to fight back. And since then, we all can develop our own abilities, even if it’s not remotely similar to the levels of the warriors. We’ve been gifted the opportunity to naturally improve ourselves thanks to the increased abilities of Body and Mind, our perception and environment through Time and Space in addition to the element we are born being proficient at. But still, the tenth power was never passed on to humans, and interestingly enough, when the demon was defeated, he was glad that such power was never given to us, meaning that if he ever comes back, we would be defenseless. The warriors’ books are still a puzzle for us to understand. Between them are contradiction and events, dialogues, and people that are never explained or given a proper context. Sometimes it is thought that it was made intentionally like this in order to test us to find the truth, but it’s ridiculous and makes no sense to write such intricate things expecting us to fill the blanks. It is probably that the warriors, even though they are the saviors of the world and the existence of humanity itself, were really terrible writers, maybe. And all of this is perhaps the reason why fate set me up to live in this life, all related to me and the mysterious tenth power…

I - Tears on a Starry Sky - Chapter 1
Spoiler:
"Elena!" A voice woke me up from my peaceful sleep on that dreadful night. It was my sister, Eliza, who was desperately calling my name.

I did not understand what the hurry was since at that time I was just a nine-year old child sleeping to go to school the next day, just as if was any other day.

"We're!... Our village is under attack! We must hurry!"

Just as she said this, my eyes opened widely and I woke up instantly, ready to go and run with my sister, but, at the same time, the thought of my hometown getting attacked froze me up, which is why I thought it was unbelievable. Eliza grabbed my hand and that contact snapped me out of confusion and made me get up quickly. We ran and got outside our home and the whole situation was horrifying; the smoke produced by the several trees and houses being burned made me cough almost instantly and it covered the midnight sky in a deep black. People was running and shouting everywhere while several arrows fell from the sky and the sound of clanking swords could be heard at the distance and the sizzling sound of the fire burning everything around scared me.

We shortly found our father and brother, and, even if it was for a second, I felt a big relief. However, I could see my brother's hateful look towards dad, and I knew that they've been in conflict with each other for quite some time, but also felt that whatever difference they had shouldn't matter now. Fortunately, they stopped and looked glad when they saw us.

"Eliza, Ernest, I count on you to protect Elena. Leave and make sure she's in safety." My father said with a very serious tone that worried me. He then took my mother's sword and gave it to my brother while my sister received his own heavy two-handed sword.

"These are our family's treasures. Bringing any of those with me guarantees that they'll fall into enemy hands. You know what to do, I trust and love you."

He said that with his eyes trembling, clearly trying to hold back his tears. I immediately understood the whole situation.

"But... Dad!" I mumbled with tears already flowing through my cheeks.

"Understand that when I leave to the battlefield you can't expect me to come back." He replied, stating the obvious, cold truth. "But I know you will be strong. Whatever path you choose, even if I don't agree with." he said this while looking at my brother. "I want you three to know that I'll always be proud."

"Do you have any regrets?" Ernest asked with a serious, yet clearly saddened face.

"What a cold thing to ask to your old man! I'm not even dead yet! But yes, I do have one regret... I won't be able to see any of you married, growing and going on with your life... But it can't be helped now. Hurry up and leave now!"

He then turned his back and started rushing towards the enemy's lines. I could feel his strong desire to turn his head and look at us for the last time, but he never did; and that display of courage accompanied me for the rest of my life.

I stared at him while his figure started to shrink in the distance until my sister took my hand and pulled me to start escaping. After several minutes trying to rush to the village's border, Eliza stopped, lay on the ground and placed her ear directly on the ground. Despite her being 15-years old, she was a very talented earth-styled user, and with her abilities she could sense her surroundings incredibly. After a few seconds, she widened her eyes in surprise and got up quickly.

"This is bad. We're slowly getting encircled. There's still a gap at ten-o'clock, but if we don't hurry we won't be able to make it."

Ernest looked at Eliza with some discontent.

"We both know that we won't make it on time, so don't try to be foolishly optimistic."

My sister wanted to reply with something, but she interrupted herself looking down, concerned by that truth. There was a brief moment of silence, as if we already had given up all hope and accepted our fates.

"Very well." My brother suddenly said.

"What do you mean with 'very well'?" Eliza asked a little worried.

"Isn't it obvious? I know what I have to do. I'll go ahead at a 12-o'clock position, draw attention, open the gap and give you a chance to escape."

"No... Don't try to rush things like that! If we think up something and we fight together maybe... Maybe..."

Ernest placed his hands on Eliza's shoulders and started to shake her up. He always did that to cheer us up whenever we felt sad, but now he did it to wake up some sense on our sister to make her start thinking clearly.

"Don't be stupid. Fighting here will only attract more enemies and it will doom us all. Besides..."

Both looked at me worried. I understood things clearly and felt so powerless, so hopeless for the fact that if it wasn't for me, they would most likely be able to get away. My brother started to walk away and prepared his plan to give us a chance, but he stopped and looked at us.

"I believe in you. Elena, you will face a difficult struggle from now on until the grave. But you'll be strong, even more than me or father. As long as you carry the ideas and beliefs of our hometown, your strength will guide you."

I knew what that was supposed to mean but I didn't completely understand that message until much later on.

"Eliza, I know more or less what inevitable fate you'll have to share with me, but please ensure our sister's safety. I will take our dear mother's sword, fight with it until I can no more and then it will probably be lost. But it doesn't matter, if it's used for this purpose, then I'm sure our mother above will be happy. But I'd like you to recover it some day, Elena. And when you do, remember our mother's name, our town, and us. I want you to remember me as a brother that always loved you until the very end. That, regardless of where I am, would make me happy."

It was so painful to see my brother in such heartbreaking state. I could only nod sadly at his requests. I wished to stay with him a little longer, but my sister once again pulled me by my hand and we started to run. I could feel how hard was for Eliza to realize what had to be done. I took a small, last glimpse at my brother and he was smiling as he turned away and his figure started to get smaller and smaller.

Several minutes passed and we were already far away from the boundaries of our town, in the immense forest outside our village. It happened just as our brother planned; he was able to open the closing circle that started to surround us and we were able to go past it, behind the enemy's line of attack. However, my sister still was very worried. Even though we were out of the danger zone, it still didn't mean safety yet.

"...!"

I noticed how my sister suddenly sense an enemy's presence and jumped backwards as a reflex.

"Take cover!" She yelled at me and I got behind a tree. That jump she made wasn't just for show; a few seconds later a fireball just passed quickly and hit the ground where Eliza would've been if she kept running. After that, a mean-looking, bearded man, probably in his thirties, jumped from the top of a tall tree and attempted to crush my sister with a big hammer of the length of an adult male arm. Eliza reacted in time and evaded the foe's attack, which hit the ground a made a little crater and sent an impressive air-wave that made the trees around tremble everywhere.

"The uniform of the Empire!" She said surprised. "And by the looks of it, he's no ordinary soldier! I'm guessing a squad leader, maybe."

"Very impressive." Replied the man while resting his weapon on his shoulder. "I can tell that you're no ordinary child, either. To be able to sneak this far... It takes some skill, but too bad I found you, so start making your prayers, kids."

"Why are you doing this?! The Empire and our village have been allies for so many times! What do you intend to gain by doing this?!" My sister yelled desperately while looking for me over her shoulder.

"I guess it isn't obvious from your position. You're going to die here anyway, so might as well tell you. To make it short, we've basically been ordered the total annihilation of your people."

A deep fear struck my heart so suddenly that I couldn't digest exactly what he meant, even though it was crystal-clear. My body froze for a moment until my older sister spoke.

"What!?"

"As for why we're doing it, I really have no idea. I guess we're enforcing our policy of 'you're with us or dead' that we have with neighboring places. You guys left the empire, so you and your people should have expected something like this to happen."

Eliza prepared her heavy sword and placed her hands together while looking at that man with a furious but determined eyes.

"Enough talk. Elena, I want you to get away from here, but within a distance where I can sense and help you if it's needed. Remain vigilant over our enemy's movements and dodge accordingly, I know you can do that."

I understood my sister's intentions and obeyed her instructions. The man simply gave an insulting smirk, like if he couldn't be serious about her threatening stance. The battle quickly started when Eliza rushed towards the enemy with considerable speed. Her left arm extended and with her palm focused and utilized an earth-styled attack, the Stone Piercing Lance technique, with which a large lance-shaped rock formed from behind the Empire soldier and moved in the air with the intention of hitting his back, while my sister approached in front of him to attack with her sword. At first it looked as if the lance was a decoy, but in reality it was used to increase her chances of hitting him, whether it was from behind or in front didn't matter.

But that man saw the intentions of my sister, jumped just before the impact of the earth lance and evaded it. It seemed that Eliza's attack backfired her, the dodged rock moved rapidly towards her. But I knew she couldn't possibly make such mistake. And I was right; she jumped shortly, placed her foot on her own technique, and used it to impulse herself and ended being higher in the air than her opponent. Taking advantage of this, she attacked vertically with her sword, however, that man blocked her blow with his hammer.

The clanking sound that both weapons created when made contact was astonishing. Even though she failed to connect a direct hit, Eliza still managed to hurt the enemy by making him fall quickly to the ground from several meters after her impact in the air. The soldier got on his feet, retreated a few steps and let out a big grin.

"Not bad... Not bad at all. When I kill you, I'll present you as trophies for King Phil, he'll surely promote me after this."

King Phil. The responsible of all this. The mention of that name was stuck in my mind for the rest of my life.

Our foe had no intention of showing mercy, so he then took a really deep breath and released a flame-throwing technique from his mouth in our direction. I could see how my sister had already guessed that he was a fire-style specialist since the beginning, so she was able to protect us from the flames by using the Earth Guard Wall technique, rising a wall of rock from the ground that shielded us. As soon as the fire stopped, she jumped backwards just before the soldier broke his way through the wall.

A series of direct, close-quarter attacks followed between my older sister and the man from the Empire. The sound of their weapons clashing with each other was constant, but after a few rounds of exchanging blows, no one was able to give a direct hit. My sibling's movements and slashes were slightly slower because she was using a two-handed sword, and it became evident that she would soon not be able to keep up with her faster and more experienced opponent.

A strong impact was given finally after a few moments. Eliza blocked her foe's attack too early, and that mistake allowed the soldier to kick her in the stomach with enough power to make her body bend momentarily before sending her flying several meters until she hit and rolled on the ground violently.

I was worried about her until I saw how she could still was able to stand up but the slow, weak way she did it scared me. In that moment, the enemy could've quickly approached and finish her. My mind went blank for an instant, and then, hundreds of thoughts about how my sister would die crossed my mind; from very simple ways to others more horrifying, like having her head crushed with his hammer or her whole body incinerated while screaming in agony. Those images felt so real, and they could soon be real, and that frightened me so much that I could feel how I was shaking from fear.

But I ended worrying so much about Eliza that I completely forgot about myself. The man from the Empire turned his head in my direction and stare at me for a second until he gave me a weird, confident smile before rushing for me.

"Elena! Move! Don't just stand there!" My sister screamed desperately, and I really wanted to follow her orders, but my body was frozen.

I saw how that man was going for the kill, and considering my sister's position, it was impossible fro me to be saved. I thought that it was surely the end for me and my whole self felt so relaxed, like if I just gave up and accepted whatever was that fate had dictated for me. Everything moved so slow for that second, and, in an instant. the only thing that seemed normal was Eliza, whose speed must have been so incredibly fast that she was able to rescue me. I noticed how our foe turned around before reaching me and expected something like this to happen in order for him to have more clear chance to win. I realized how I was being used as a bait, and it made me feel so useless.

Even when he was able to use that moment to strike, my sister was so incredibly powerful for a few seconds, that she overpowered the soldier with her speed, and the man's reaction wasn't fast enough to dodge her attack. The determination and courage displayed on Eliza's eyes were so intimidating, I had never seen her like that.

The movements she made allowed her to slash the opponent's torso with a direct hi from her sword. I could swear that if her attack was just a little stronger it would've been able to cut that man in half. My sister inflicted a really long wound that made our enemy bleed and retreat a few steps back. But at that moment, Eliza wasn't someone who showed mercy, so even if the battle could be considered won, she made sure that we would be safe, so she killed the soldier with the Earth Spike Technique, which I remember how much she used to practice it. From the ground, a rock formed with a pointy edge and pierced the man's neck with ease, slowly killing him while he was choking and struggling for air.

It was the first time I had seen someone die in such horrible fashion with my own eyes, but I understood that it definitely wouldn't be the last; maybe next time it would have to be me who has to kill like that. A high-leveled fight like that... It feels like it can last forever, but back then it ended so suddenly and easily.

There was a little moment of silence until my tired sister slowly walked towards me, possibly to continue with our escape, or so I thought. She slapped my face, with tears on her eyes and a heavy breathing, but hugged me shortly after. That hug felt so special and warm... For a moment it reminded me when, long ago, when our mother was still alive, how I was used to be hugged by her so often.

"Why didn't you move?!" She said a little angered while wiping her tears. "But right now we're both safe, and that's what matters. Let's go."

We continued moving, a little faster than our previous pace. The fire techniques that our foe used burned some trees, and the smoke rising on the sky was a signal that more soldiers would come eventually. After a while, I noticed how tired my sister really was; her breath accelerated and her movements started to slow down. After a while, we stopped and rested while sitting against a tree. I could still keep going on, but Eliza looked so exhausted that I started to doubt if she could even be able to stand up. She placed her ear on the ground just like before, and without any surprise, confirmed that we had some followers. I could see how she wished to get up and leave, but she couldn't.

"Here, take our father's sword and leave. I know it's a little heavy, but you can handle it, right? ...If I keep going like this I will only slow you down and we will both get caught." I listened in disbelief.

"But..." I desperately wanted to say something, but this time my sister was right, and I knew it.

"We have about ten minutes before they reach this point. That's plenty of time for you to escape. Besides, after they see what we did to that man, it's not likely that they will want to return empty-handed, so, whatever happens to me when they reach this point may mean that they won't keep searching" She paused abruptly and sighed deeply. "I'm sorry, Elena. I'm afraid that this is as far as I can go."

I stood up and took the sword with teary eyes, but I wanted to be strong and I didn't wish to leave Eliza with and image of her little sister crying.

"... Don't worry, sister!" I gathered enough courage to speak. "I... I'll make sure to sleep well, to eat lots of vegetables, and brush my teeth, and get a boyfriend like you always wanted one, and... And..." I couldn't say anything else.

I started to take a few steps away, I decided to go on and stay alive. And she called my name and spoke her last words to me.

"When I saw that you were in danger, I had this sudden urge to save you, and before I even knew it, I had the power to do it. When you fight to protect what is dear for you, that's when you can achieve an incredible strength. Those are just a part of the ideas of our people, that's the reason why we're so strong. Dying while protecting what's important to you is, and will always be, a good cause to live your life until the very end. Carry the ideas and emotions of our hometown and you'll always be able to find a source of strength. Now, please go and live you life as fullest as you can!"

I nodded and ran away just before I started to cry and ask myself why did things had to end up like this. I turned my head to see my dear sister for the last time. Even though it was nothing more than a mere glimpse, that image stayed with me forever. Eliza was sitting there against a tree, the full moon on the sky lit the entire place while the breeze made the leaves and grass move gracefully. But most importantly, she was smiling. Even when she knew what was about to happen to her, she was still happy, knowing that I would be safe.

"To protect what's important to you..." The whole night I even considered to never leave behind my family and share their fate if necessary. But when Eliza said that, I realized the sacrifices that had already been done for my sake. And then I acted quickly to escape, I did anything that would guarantee my survival and not let their sacrifices go to waste. I understood from that point forward my life would never be the same, and difficult times would wait for me in the future.

The strong conviction I felt for carrying my family's wishes for my well-being made me mature so much that night, and, despite my young age, I no longer considered myself a child, or at least I stopped thinking as one. Perhaps I decided to renounce to my innocence the moment I took that heavy sword and accepted the responsibility of looking ahead of time in every moment. That sword by itself was ridiculously heavy, but now I felt it had a burden that weighted as much as the world.

I ran and ran for hours until my little body couldn't take it anymore and collapsed looking for rest. I lay on the grassy ground, exhausted, and looked up at the sky for a brief moment until my eyes closed. But in that last vision of that night I couldn't see any star, only sorrows that began to overflow my eyes. Everything that happened that night now feels like if it was just an instant, so sudden and fast that didn't let me react in time. And I continued to lay there, losing my consciousness slowly just as I was giving up to sleep, and hoping that maybe when I woke up everything would be fine.

"What will happen to me from now on?" I wondered while vanishing in deep slumber, and that thought echoed throughout my mind.

III - Our Legend - Chapter 1 part 1
Spoiler:
"Ah..... Yes! Today is the day!"

Yeah, finally, the day I've been waiting for since I enlisted in the >>Royal Capital Academy of Uaan << was here! There is going to be a special event that all students in their final year have to take in order to graduate. And is not just any event, oh, no, that'd be totally wrong! The premise of the last project we have to accomplish is to go and experience work for real! Yes! No more sitting around the desk and homework and being scolded and making excuses and this and that and... I've never been good with stuff like that, so naturally, I'm really excited about this!

With even more energy in the morning than usual, I took my preparations quickly in order to arrive early to school. I certainly didn't want to miss a day like this, so from the very beginning I planned it to be a perfect day!

"Hey, >>Josephine<
My mom called me just as I finished tying my shoes. I took my backpack and hurried up downstairs to see what my mom needed. Well, it turned out she was the one who wanted to see what I was up to.

"Hmm, I see that you are unusually enthusiastic this morning, mind if I ask why?"

"Mom, how can you forget? Today's the day!"

She seemed a little troubled and started to ponder what was going on. I gave her an 'are-you-serious?' look with my face and I could see how nervous she started to get.

"Ahaha! I'm just kidding! Of course I know! Yes... You seem awfully energetic indeed. But remember that you are only 17 - before you know it, you'll be 40, married, with kids, and with old bones that weren't like they used to! So please remember to not overextend yourself while you... While you... Just be careful! Haha..."

She finished giving me a worried laughter after such generic and repetitive advise she always says. I mean, like, really? She totally forgot the importance of this day even though it was the only thing that I've been talking about for the last few weeks! There was nothing I could have done about it, mom always forgets these kind of things so I didn't bother in explaining her and just gave a suspicious-looking expression to her direction. Just before I could grab my breakfast, my little sister came downstairs too.

"Great, now I'll waste more time around here." That's what I thought, but as soon as she arrived I said "Good morning!" and internally begged for the conversation to end there just get out and go directly to school. But of course things didn't go that way.

"Say, >>Josephine<<, you'll be leaving soon, right?" She asked me, her eyes seemed to get bigger because of how curious she looked, but that's just what I thought.

"Of course, I have school soon, unlike you. Look at you, you're only 13 and already in vacations. But the next time you'll be in what I will call 'my old school' so you better prepare yourself because you won't be able to slack off like you've been doing lately!"

"Oh, please, I'm not the one skipping classes and constantly making troubles because of the lack of work, am I?" Ugh... That little girl some times thinks she's really clever. I can't say that she's not right, though, but that doesn't give her the right to act like a jerk! And to ME, her lovely, sweet, and caring older sister! I wish I could hit some sense of respect in her little head, but right now I have more important stuff to think about.

"Anyway, that's not exactly what I asked... I was mentioning the fact that you wouldn't be around here for some time..." She suddenly looked a little worried, I could say sad.

"AH HA!" I could see where she was getting at. "Don't worry, little sis, I'll miss you too! Maybe I'll get some souvenirs from ALL the places I'll be visiting!" I said with a taunting smirk. Haha! It paid of because she got mad, I think she was envious!

"Um... What are you talking about?" My mom asked, clueless.

This time, my sister and I both looked at her direction with a somewhat disappointing look on our faces, almost as if we were asking to ourselves how can she be so like herself. So in the end I just spit it out and explained the graduation project and that I would be travelling around the country doing first-hand work and getting experience. Of course she got a little sentimental and hugged me tightly while telling me how much she loved me and that I should be really careful and stuff like that. I really didn't want to make her feel bad by breaking from her bear-like hug but I had to get going.

"Thanks, mom. By the way, where's dad?"

"Ah, that good-for-nothing old man is still sleeping! How can a father be like that at a time like this when her own daughter, her own flesh and blood is going through such an important moment in her life?!"

"Ah... Hmm, well then, I'll just come by when I'm done with school and then I'll say goodbye before leaving." I sighed at my mom's words. Talking about crazy, she can forget most of the important things and is still sweet and nice with everyone, but as long as my dad comes into place, she's like a totally different person; remembering every little detail of the past, and probably getting ready for some in the future, that has ever annoyed her about my dad. It's like as soon as she gets him on her mind she goes completely mad. I don't even know how and why the hell are they married.

"Hey... Say, are you going to go through >>Elias'<< house?" My sister asked me with a slightly embarrassed look on her face. I wasn't sure about why or how the question came to be, and I wanted to leave as soon as possible so I just answered.

"Yeah, I'm going to actually meet with him on the way to go to school together with him."

"Ah... Hehe... Well, if that's the case, can you please say 'hi' to him for me?"

"Eh? Why don't YOU go and tell him? I mean, his house is just around the corner."

"N-no way! Just look at me! I look like I just wake up! My hair's a mess and all that, so it would be really embarrassing if he were to look at me like this!"

"Yeah, yeah, whatever, ok I'll do it."

She thanked me for that and I took my lunch food and, of course, my battle staff. And finally, off I went. I faced the morning sun while I left my house and my mom's cheers from the door started to become quieter and quieter at the distance. The beginning of my journey was just about to begin, and there was no better way to start it than an usual walking to the school, the Royal Capital City is really huge after all. I live in one of the outer districts, probably one of the nicest and most relaxing spots of the city. >>Uaan<< is proud in being the most technologically advanced country of the continent. Even though we aren't as bigger or as powerful like the Entwined Empire or the Duplica Republic, we still have a lot of things that they surely are jealous of!

"Ah..." I sighed happily, like I do whenever I have calm and nice memories or when I get nostalgia. I tend to feel grateful for what I have every time I get excited.

But anyway, not much later I arrived at my friend's house. And there I was; waiting for him like a minute outside his door, knocking and almost yelling him to hurry up. Geez, it's always the same with him, even though I know what to expect, I at least thought that this day would be an exception because of the beginning of the graduation project and all that. I seriously considered just leaving, and just after I turned away the door opened.

"Finally! You want me to get old here waiting for..."

Yeah, >>Elias<< wasn't the one who opened the door, it was her grandma, >>Maron<<. I sometimes wonder what goes through his mind sometimes, but anyway, after an awkward moment of silence I greeted her politely. I was starting to get mad, but >>Maron<< is such a sweet, lovely old lady, so I can't be like that around her.

"I'm sorry about my grandson, I really think he sometimes just needs a little more of motivation to get by. That's why I think you've always been a wonderful girl, although it surprises me that his lack of enthusiasm doesn't get countered by your own contagious attitude!"

"Haha, thank you very much, don't mention it. But I think I'll have to pull him by his ear extra hard this time!"

"Ah, yes, do it reeeeally hard this time for me, too! Haha!"

I've always wondered how he can be like that while living with her grandma. I mean, she's pretty cool! If I could live with someone half as awesome as her, I swear I would be forever happy!

Hmm... But >>Elias<< is a nice guy too. I remember perfectly the day I met him. I was like 11 or 12, on a winter... No, early spring afternoon, I think. He suddenly arrived to the city and started living with her grandma. >>Maron's<< always been like the nice outside-of-the-family friend that with time becomes a family member. I mean, my mom sometimes tell me that she once used to babysit me and changed my diapers on not just one occasion! Man, how embarrassing! Ah, yes, going back to >>Elias<<, I remember how he was always alone after arriving here. Yeah, being a new kind in some new place can be tough, that's I later introduced myself and showed him around the city.

"...Morning." He said after finally showing.

Man... How depressing. Today he looks as gloomy as ever. I could say that it was even worse than usual; his hair was like he just got up of bed, which is really a shame, since his raven-black hair looks so cool on him, and he doesn't take care of it. His eyes looked like he hadn't sleep in days, and he was still yawning, very deeply and loud.

"What the hell?! You look terrible! This has to be the worst condition I've ever seen you in the morning!" At this point I was really pissed of. Showing late to his own door and then in those conditions... Well, that's >>Elias<< for you...

"Ah... Sorry about that. You look more angry today than usual, sometimes I think that you drain my energy..." He had the guts to reply with that.

"At what time did you go to sleep last night? Didn't I tell you to take better care of yourself?"

"Sorry, >>Josephine<<, but I have no idea. I don't even know if I slept. Today's the day, after all. I guess I couldn't rest well because I was nervous thinking about it..."

I sighed in disbelief. Well, at least that's one of his redeeming qualities, he's pretty honest.

"Anyway." I said while rolling my eyes. "We have to get going now, so, if you excuse us."

"Yes, yes. Please take care of this mess of a boy here. >>Elias<<, I've told you before, please be a little more considerate towards >>Josephine<< here, after all, she takes her time to come here when she could just go straight to school." >>Maron<< politely scolded her grandson. And yeah, she's right! He should be more grateful!

"I'm sorry."

Yeah, he's always apologizing for everything. Not a bad thing, but sometimes I think that he feels like he can just do whatever he wants and just say 'sorry' and expect everything to be forgiven and forgotten... Nah, not really, he's always been a timid boy so I can't imagine him having those kind of intentions. Maybe he really does forget things and gets anxious very much. Who knows. He's been my best friend since so long that things like these tend to happen, so I'll just ignore it. But I wish I could know what goes through his mind. He's quiet most of the time and that's when I'm around him, if not, he's almost completely mute.

"Haha! Don't worry! Ever since I've met him I have the firm conviction that someday he'll wake up from this form and become a tall, strong man capable of bearing the world's weight under his shoulders! Just like a filthy little bug transforming into a beautiful butterfly spreading its wings!"

"Hey, please stop making fun of me... Besides, I'm not that short..."

"HAHA! How funny! We're the same age and you're shorter than me! Maybe not by much, but yeah, guys are supposed to be taller. I'm like 170 centimeters tall and you're a few centimeters shorter. I've told you before, if you actually took some time to train properly, you'd be way taller than me, but instead, you slack around wasting your time doing whatever."

"Hmm, no use in arguing when I know you're right. It's not like I can keep living like this anymore, with the graduation project coming and all that, we'll have a lot of work to do." He said that with a rather upset tone. Wow, it's incredible how lazy he is! To the point where even thinking about the future puts him in that mood. But that's wrong in so many levels! When thinking about the future, it should always expected to be something hard, something challenging! That's when the goal really pays off, and even then, it's the path, the road one travels, the experience what's important.

>>Elias<< yawned again, this time stretching his arms upwards. Geez, he always manages to somehow make me lose my inspiring thoughts.

Anyway, this time we finally left the place after saying goodbye to >Maron<< and started walking to school. Ah... The last walking to school we'll have in a long, long time... Maybe even the last one we'll ever had.

"What's wrong?" He asked me after watching me. He looked really concerned, so I can't imagine the kind of face I put when I thought about that.

"Hey... I just realized that this will be the last time we'll get to walk together to school..."

There was a brief moment of silence. We where taking our usual route, a pretty white stone-made bridge that connects our district to the central part of the Royal Capital City. Water flows under it in a canal and there's nice-colored green grass at both ends of the bride, like if the water tried to overflow and reach it. A very nice scenery that became something not very special since I'm used to walk around here almost every day, but with what I realized, I knew it would, some day, be a place that I would remember and make me smile.

"Ah!" He exclaimed putting his arms on the back of his head, looking surprised. "Yes, you're right! How could I forget this? We won't be able to do this anymore on the future, right? Then..."

Wow, what happened to him? He doesn't look to care much when forgetting things like waking up early to go to school, and now he's shocked for something like that? Anyway, not like I'm one to talk, I suddenly got a little sad when I thought about that, too. He interrupted himself and lowered his head, looking really, and I mean, really depressed.

"Hey... I'm really sorry... This was supposed to be an special day, sort of, and here I am ruining it with being late and all that... I hope you can forgive me..."

"Eh?!" Geez, that was fast, now he was sad and I felt guilty for letting my stupid mind talk out loud. "Hey c'mon it's not a big deal! I mean, you're not ruining anything so let's just keep going like we always do! Besides, it's not like this has to be the last time, you know, we can just walk this road whenever we want, right?"

"But it wouldn't be the same."

"I know that, but see it this way: Some day, a lot of years later, we'll be able to walk on this same path. But when that time comes, we'll be way stronger! So much that these silly walks will only remind us of how weak we were in comparison! Right now this is just like a little something that will get replaced soon with something even greater. Say, for example, our adventure days hunting the highs and lows of >>Uaan<< that we will have after today!"

"Hmm... Maybe you're right." Bingo! He's so easy to convince sometimes, or maybe I am a great persuader. Either way, he gives up easily most of the times, he's the kind of guys that doesn't want any kind of conflict.

After that we didn't talk much and kept walking. The silence was almost unbearable compared to other days. He seemed like he had a lot in his mind. His eyes didn't wander around as much, like he was really focused on something. Today is the day, after all, so I guess it shouldn't surprise me that he's a little stranger. I mean, even I can feel that today I'm different - but in a good way, since I'm super excited! >>Elias<<, on the other hand, not so much...

"Oh, yes, before I forget, my sister says hi." Good thing I remembered, if I hadn't, she'd start bothering me for it.

"Okay. Return the greeting from my part, I guess."

"Say, what do you have in your mind? You look kind of serious today, well, more than how you're used to anyway, so, what are you thinking about?" Yeah, I used my sister's favor as an excuse to restart the conversation and ask him that.

"... Nothing important. I just wondered if I forgot to put something to my backpack, since I got up and left my room as fast as I could earlier when you knocked on my door..."

"Hehehe..." I sped up a little to put myself directly in front of him while I started to walk backwards. I approached my face to his and our eyes met. Yes! There I saw it! His embarrassed-looking expression looked as cute as always, haha! I love teasing him like that. Ah, yes, but the important part was that I could see how his eyes moved away from me.

"Not bad this time, >>Elias<<. But you should know better, I can tell when you're lying! So, c'mon, just tell me already!"

"... I'm not lying, really."

"Ah! I saw it again, and this time that lie was even worse than the first one!" At this point, I had to step it up if I wanted to get the truth, so I made a risky gamble and pretended that I was offended and not interested anymore.

"Hmph! Alright! If you don't want to tell me, then FINE! Geez, here I am seriously worrying about what's bothering you and then you lie to me not only once, but twice! Fine! I'm not asking you again!"

After I said this, I turned around and gave him my back while I made some distance and crossed my arms. I wanted to get a glimpse of what his reaction would be, but if I did, he may have noticed and my act would be in vain. About a minute passed and the tension-filled silence started to get at me. I thought for a moment that he may have figured my intentions, but I had to hold on a little longer to see.

"I'm sorry... I'll tell you, then. But please don't get mad at me..."

HAHA! Score! Another point on my list! I quickly turned around to hear him. Whoops! I think it looked pretty obvious, but who cares, he's going to tell me anyway. Wow, he looked like he regretted what happened, his eyes were like those of a scolded puppy begging to be let inside the house.

"Well, since we're going to be travelling soon and getting experience for real, I started to wonder about what would happen if something someday would go bad... It's not like I'm entirely scarred, but I'm worried about if we ever get into a situation where we couldn't get out... Specially if I'm not able to do anything..."

Only that? Bah, my act wasn't even worth it. I thought he seriously had something interesting to say, like if she liked some girl or something like that. I wanted to just roll my eyes and turn around in disappointment, but since he was kinda serious about what he said I replied to him.

"Was that all? Geez, you sound like my mom, always saying the same thing over and over. Don't worry, we'll be fine. We're strong and we'll get stronger. Besides, the four of us already have a role in the team and our tactics aren't bad."

"Maybe you're right, but that feeling won't go away any time soon."

"You worry too much! Instead, you'd be better off focusing on how we should manage to get the highest score! But bah, you never get excited for anything anyway... So don't think I'll go easy on you since not only your grade is in risk, it's MY, our grade that will be low if you don't put much effort!"

"But >>Josephine<<, you're the one with the bare-minimum grades..."

"Hmph! Well, you're not a genius yourself!"

Ugh... That always get me. I don't think I'm pretty bad at school stuff, it's just that I HATE just sitting around listening boring lectures and writing papers and doing homework and all that. I mean, what's the point? Sure some of those things may come in handy sometimes, but in the end all that is useless! Everything you need to know about how to fight is by training and getting first-hand experience. Only there one is able to improve their skills and and learn how to trusts our instincts.

I was inspired, I wanted to scream my thoughts out and spread my enthusiasm, but I am conscious that sometimes I get my father's bad habit of starting long speeches, which are all basically the same and people around me have already heard them like, a million times already. Anyway, before I noticed, we were already inside the city and near the school. Ah, I haven't left, but yet, I'm already having the feeling that I'll miss this place. The lively streets and tall buildings, the pretty green of the trees on the parks... I'm just so nostalgic today! But a change of scenery will make me forget all of this, maybe. I'm looking forward to visiting lots of places already!

"Hey, look it's Rim. She's over there, can you see her?" Elias asked me, and I placed my hand on my forehead to cover the sunlight as I focused on the direction he was pointing at.

No doubt about it, he was right, our friend, Rim, was there walking by herself. We both sped up and called her until we caught up with her.

"Oh, my. Greetings, Elias, Josephine. Nice to see you two! How are you?" She said after noticing us while we kept walking.

What can I say about her? We've been friends since even before we were in the academy, I did't meet her before Elias, though. She's pretty sophisticated, in fact, I was at first pretty annoyed at the way she talks, like she's from an entirely different world. One gets used to it later, though. Sometimes I'm surprised at how different we are. Well, Elias and I are very different too, but with Rim I feel like we're the opposite on almost everything! She's kinda shy and doesn't seem to know a lot of people, so I guess she started to hang out with me after we met each other.

"Hi." Elias greeted her while awkwardly waving his hand.

"H-hello." Rim replied quietly, almost like if she was talking to herself.

... Wow, I've thought about it before, and these two have a lot in common. If they started dating and all that I'm sure they'd be a match made in heaven! But nah, every time I think about that I realize that neither of them are take a lot of initiative at anything. Well, at least Rim still has a chance; I'm pretty sure she could be one of the popular girls at school if she had the right attitude. I mean, she's what guys could consider "cute" because of her petite body. Not to mention that white but not pale and seemingly perfect skin, that bright and golden blonde hair, and those green eyes. And from what I've heard, she has really rich parents that work or have ties with the royalty or something like that...

"Ah..."

"Is something bothering you, Josephine?" Rim asked me after I let out a deep sigh.

Yeah, YOU are the one bothering me. Not only you are prettier than me, you also probably have a better family and money and lots of nice things that I could never even dream of having! I'm a sucker for this kind of things, imagining that other people have things that I don't always makes me feel so jealous, even if it's something not important.

"It's nothing, let's just carry on."

"Let us continue, then. But before we have no time to talk about it, I would like to ask you both how are you feeling about the graduation project. If I had to give an answer, I would say that I really am worrying a bit about it..."

"I'm a little scared, I hope we pass." Elias' answer made me smile internally.

Hehehe... Ah, Rim, one second you make me look up to you as something I envy, but in the next moment I feel like you need a hundred elevators to get on my level! Yes, she may have the better looks and wealth, but I have what's most important; my skills and my victorious sense of purpose! And I wouldn't change it for anything you have, Rim, because this enthusiasm and energy I feel inside of me are blessings more unique than a charming face or any fortune!

"Geez, you guys sound like scared cats! We'll be just fine! If you can't learn to trust and believe in yourselves, then at least have some faith in me. Besides, you guys are the support of the team, so it's most likely that you'll be the ones that are the least hurt if we have to battle..."

"Yes, that is why I worry so much. Having the responsibility of protecting another person's life weighs down on me even more than my own life itself." Elias replied quickly, not even letting me finish what I wanted to say. The look on his face changed a lot. His eyes seemed to look at the distance as his serious expression made the brief silence a little uncomfortable. It's scary how he can sometimes change the mood so dramatically.

"Very well said, Elias."

Out of nowhere, our other friend, >>Cain<< appeared and said that. Geez, not even a "hi everyone!" or something like that to make an act of presence, he just showed up who knows from where and who knows how much he had already listened from our conversation.

">>Cain<
"Man, you oughta sharpen your sensing skills a little more, won't you?" He said, crossing his arms and kinda disappointed.

"Eh?! What do you mean with that?"

"Are you slow or something? If one day you get to be followed by a silent and deadly stealth professional, you'd get your ass handed to you in a second! I mean, I was near you, and yet, you didn't suspect a thing. And c'mon, we've known each other for a while, so it would be even easier knowing my energy signature more or less."

Grrr... This guys gets me on my nerves. Now, >>Cain<< is kind of a weird guy. My first impression of him was that he was raised by delinquents or something like that, considering that he's a jerk, but one that can make his threats a reality because he's a tough guy. He always tries to "test" us whenever he has the chance, and sometimes with very ridiculous or stupid stuff that's really annoying.

"Well, you have to admit that at least he has a point, Josephine. It wouldn't hurt if you could be more aware of other's presence." Elias said while he kept walking with Rim, not even looking at my direction.

"What? Elias, don't tell me that you knew he was around!"

"I knew."

"I did catch a glimpse of his presence and located him nearby, too." Rim also answered, making me feel so embarrassed.

"Ah... W-well! You guys did it alright! Just focus on improving your skills and your confidence and you'll be surprised of what you can achieve! H-hehe..."

The three of them ignored me and just kept walking silently, giving me their cold shoulders like if they were asking me to shut up. Seriously... Sometimes I think they conspire against me to make me look bad...

"The same could be said about you." >>Cain<< said while giving me a taunt-looking grin when he turned his head on my direction.

"Ahh! Just cut it out already! I may not be too good at Mind-styled skills and all that, but we're supposed to be a team! And in that way we can use our abilities to cover up for each other's weaknesses! Isn't that how it is supposed to work?"

"You are correct, Josephine. Elias and I certainly can not hope to achieve the levels of damage and speed you can accomplish. Well, I know I would not be able to... But in that same way, you are not capable of using some skills we have. Therefore, by joining forces, we have access to a wider range of solutions available to us!" Rim preached.

"Uhm, thanks." I swear sometimes I don't understand her very well. It would've been a lot better if she just said "I agree!" or something like that instead of going into all detail.

"What the hell, Josephine? You should be thanking Rim properly for such words of wisdom!" >>Cain<< was kinda pissed off when he said that.

>>Cain<< is also very defensive when it comes to some things, particularly towards Rim. It just goes on and on showing the kind of person he is. Even though he is one year older than the rest of us, I think he feels like the wise mentor of the team that wants to act like if he's all cool and mature. But c'mon, who can take him seriously when he's such a jerk? Besides, that bandana on his forehead looks sooo stupid!

Hmph... I started to get a little desperate, and I didn't want to keep this up so I had to change the topic and focus on what was important at the moment. And what could be more important than this day, after all?

"AAAAHH! Ok, alright, well, perfect!" I shouted for a while and I got their attention. "Let's just think on what we'll be doing after today! We can worry about what will come when it comes, so, for now we should be putting all of our energies in the journey that we we'll soon be together!"

I stretched my arm and placed my inviting fist in the air with the hopes of having an awesome display of friendship! ... No one followed me, though, and I started to feel very awkward, so I looked at Elias in the eyes and moved my head a little so that he could back me up.

"Uh, well, ok." He hesitated a little, but soon enough placed his hand near mine.

"Yes, let us go." Rim giggled while timidly joining us.

"Do I have any other option? Count me in!" >>Cain<< was the last one, but he too followed us.

The four of us placed each other's fist together. What a wonderful way to start this reunion! We've known each other for a while, we've been through a lot of things. But now, the bond between us will intensify starting today, the day we'll travel all around >>Uaan<< entrusting each other's backs! In that moment I closed my eyes and smiled; in my mind I made an oath to myself: No matter what may happen to us, nothing can take us apart! We'll always stay together! This team will be number one because we have an unbreakable bond!

"Alright! Let's go! Let's make this our adventure! Our legend!"
